Admission FAQs for Parents and
Guardians of Applicants

How does my student know if they have been admitted?
Your student can log in to the student portal, my.ucsc.edu. All applicants were provided a seven-digit UCSC user name and password on a bright pink sheet of paper when they were originally sent their acknowledgment letter in the mail. After logging in to the portal, your student should go to “Application Status” and click on “View Status.”

If admitted, how does my student accept the offer of admission?
In the student portal, my.ucsc.edu, your student should click on the link “Now that I’m Admitted, What’s Next?” From there, your student will be directed to the multi-step online process for accepting the offer of admission. To view the steps in the acceptance process, go to:
» MyUCSC Guide.

What is the deadline for accepting the offer of admission?
The firm deadline for accepting the offer of admission is 11:59:59 p.m. on May 1 for freshmen and June 1 for transfer students. Please encourage your student to accept the offer as soon as they have all the required information, and well before the deadline.

What happens after my student accepts?
Once your student has accepted the offer of admission, please encourage them to continue checking the portal regularly for important information from the campus, including any “To Do” items that may be listed. Meeting the conditions of admission, as well as any financial aid and housing deadlines, is critical and ensures your student’s continued status as an admitted student to the campus. Important dates and deadlines can be found at: http://admissions.ucsc.edu/apply/dates_deadlines.cfm.

Does UCSC offer orientation programs?
Yes! UC Santa Cruz Orientation Programs is where students begin their college careers and ensure their successful academic and social transition into the UC Santa Cruz community.

Orientation introduces UC Santa Cruz students and their parents or guardians to a wide range of learning opportunities outside the classroom: leadership development, extracurricular activities, student organizations, community service, recreational classes, and more. In addition, students receive academic advising to help prepare for the coming year with recommendations for courses of study and the opportunity to enroll in classes.

What are the conditions of admission?
Admission decisions are based primarily on self-reported information your student has provided on the application. Students are admitted provisionally with certain conditions they must meet to ensure their admission remains intact. Note: some students may have additional conditions to those shown here.

» Fall 2009 Transfer Standard Conditions of Admission

If my student does receive a grade below a C or their overall academic performance drops, what happens?
Not meeting the conditions of admission will result in the withdrawal of an admission offer. Please encourage your student to notify our office in writing immediately in this case. An e-mail that includes the student’s user name sent to myapplication@ucsc.edu should indicate all current grades received and the reason(s) for any drop in academic performance.

If I want to speak with someone about my student’s admission, whom can I call?
Information about an applicant’s admission is considered confidential (see the California Information Practices Act of 1977), so although we can speak in general terms with you about our admission policies, we cannot provide specific details about an application or an applicant’s status. If your student wishes to include you in a conversation or meeting with an Admissions representative, we are happy to speak with you at that time.

What if my student didn’t complete the required exams?
Admitted students should reference their conditions of admission and their “To Do” list in the student portal for any tests that may still be required of them. If they did not take all the required SAT/ACT exams, they must register to take the exam(s) soon so that their official scores can be received in our office by the records deadline specified on their conditions of admission.

What if my student was not offered admission?
Not being admitted to UC Santa Cruz does not necessarily mean the end of a UC education. Applicants not offered admission to our campus will be directed to a number of useful resources: for example, our process and deadlines for appeals; requirements for transfer if they were denied as a freshman; and other enrollment opportunities in the UC system, if available.

What opportunities are available to help us learn more about UC Santa Cruz?
"Spring Spotlight" is designed for admitted students and their parents or guardians to introduce them to the campus and determine if UCSC is right for them. The program includes daily student-led walking tours, providing an overview of the academic, residential, and student-life experience at UCSC. You’ll be able to see the colleges (including viewing dorm and apartment rooms), attend presentations, and visit classrooms.

Campus tours are also available to the general public.

Is there anything else I should know?
Know that you can and are helping your student by just being informed about UC Santa Cruz and the admission process. If admitted, encourage your student to check the my.ucsc.edu portal regularly for updates and messages from the campus and to meet their conditions of admission and all required campus deadlines. If not admitted, encourage your student to seek alternative educational opportunities and to use the information provided on our web site to learn about future options for enrollment at UC Santa Cruz.
