Dean’s List Honors and University Honors

Beginning fall 2008, UC Santa Cruz instituted two new honors designations to acknowledge and reward student academic achievement: Dean’s List Honors and University Honors. These newer honors designations are in addition to the long-standing College Honors and Department Honors awarded to students at graduation.

Dean’s List Honors
Dean’s List Honors are awarded quarterly to students who took at least 15 units in that quarter and who achieved at or above certain grade point averages (GPAs). Please note that the Jack Baskin School of Engineering has a separate GPA cutoff for Dean’s List Honors. Dean’s List Honors appear quarterly on the official and unofficial transcripts.

University Honors
University Honors include the designations of Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude and are awarded at graduation. The designations are based on GPA, according to the following rankings: Summa Cum Laude, top 2 percent; Magna Cum Laude, next 3 percent; Cum Laude, next 10 percent. The notation “University Honors” will appear on the student’s diploma and transcript.
